Cancer – What is Bone Cancer? | Bone Cancer | Bone Marrow Cancer

Bone is the supporting framework of the body. Most bones are hollow. The outer part of bones consists of a network of fibrous tissue called matrix onto which calcium salts are laid down. The soft tissue inside hollow bones is called bone marrow.Bone cancer is a type of cancer that can affect both children and adults, although it is more common in children and teens. It is categorized based on whether the cancer originated in the bone or whether it spread from another location to the bone. Secondary bone cancer, or cancer that has spread to the bone from another part of the body, is much more common than primary bone cancer.

In fact, primary bone cancer is considered rare. We’ll focus specifically on primary bone cancer here.
Several types of bone cancer exist. Some types of bone cancer occur primarily in children, while others affect mostly adults.Primary bone cancer is cancer that starts in the bone. In general, the term “bone cancer” does not include cancers that begin elsewhere in the body and spread to the bone. This is known as secondary bone cancer; it starts in another part of the body and then spreads to the bone. Unlike primary bone cancer, secondary bone cancer is common in cases of advanced cancer.

The human skeletal system is made up of more than 200 bones that protect the internal organs, allow people to stand upright, and attach to muscles that allow movement. Bones are connected to other bones by ligaments, which are bands of tough, fibrous tissue. Cartilage is the tough, fibrous material that covers and protects the joints where bones come together. Bones are hollow and filled with bone marrow, which is spongy, red tissue that produces blood cells.

Understanding bone cancer treatment options, the role of different doctors specializing in the treatment of bone cancer, and how and when to access new and innovative bone cancer treatment options available through clinical trials is essential in order to achieve the best outcome from bone cancer treatment. The Cancer Consultants Bone Cancer Information Center has been designed to help patients understand bone cancer and bone cancer treatment options while providing ongoing information, inspiration, support, and community to individuals affected by a diagnosis of bone cancer.

Throughout your life, bones constantly renew themselves by breaking down old bone cells and replacing them with new ones. If an abnormal cell develops, a tumour may start to grow in the bone. There are several types of bone cancer. Each type behaves differently and is treated differently.
