Kidney Cancer – How to Protect From Kidney Cancer? | Kidney Cancer Awareness | Kidney Cancer

The James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer, with support from Kidney Cancer UK, today announces new research that shows a shockingly low awareness and understanding of kidney cancer amongst the Great British general public. The YouGov survey of 2,145 GB adults shows that kidney cancer is the least heard about form of the disease, with only 2% of GB adults having heard much about it when compared to a range of other cancers. Interestingly, over half of GB adults claim to have heard most about cervical cancer and 42% for leukaemia, even though there are fewer cases of these diseases than kidney cancer each year. According to the survey, only half of GB adults have ever even heard of the term kidney cancer.

Often, kidney cancers are found incidentally, meaning that the cancer is found during medical tests for some other illness such as gallbladder disease.1 However, because the symptoms of kidney cancer can often be mistaken for signs of other diseases or ailments, the disease often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed until it has metastasized. The first course of treatment for kidney cancer is usually an operation to remove the primary tumor and the diseased kidney.2 Other commonly used treatments include immunotherapy, radiation, and chemotherapy.

The exact cause of kidney cancer is unknown; however, early detection can help to offset the spread of cancer; and recent advances in diagnosis and surgical procedures such as radiation and chemotherapy allow even more patients to live with the disease while maintaining their normal lifestyles and the objective of World Kidney Day and Kidney Cancer Awareness Month is to raise awareness and to encourage regular screenings of all patients with diabetes and hypertension for chronic kidney disease. If detected early, chronic kidney disease can be treated;

In adults, the most common type of kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma. Other less common types of kidney cancer can occur. Transitional cell carcinoma, which affects the ureters, can also begin in the kidneys. Children are more likely to develop a kind of kidney cancer called Wilms’ tumor. The incidence of kidney cancer seems to be increasing, though it isn’t clear why. Many kidney cancers are detected during procedures for other diseases or conditions. Imaging techniques such as computerized tomography are being used more often, which may lead to the discovery of more kidney cancers.

Cancer – Broccoli Vegetable Can Stop Stomach Cancer | Stomach Cancer Preventing With Broccoli Vegetable | Reduce Cancer With Broccoli Vegetable

An anti cancer compound found in broccoli and cabbage works by lowering the activity of an enzyme associated with rapidly advancing breast cancer, according to a University of California, Berkeley, study appearing this week in the online early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Fresh broccoli sprouts contain plenty of sulforaphane, a natural biochemical that appears to trigger the production of enzymes in the gut that protect against oxygen radicals, DNA-damaging chemicals, and inflammation. In an article published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, scientists found that eating two and a half ounces of baby broccoli daily may help stave off some serious health problems.

Broccoli, a cruciferous vegetable, contains high levels of the protective phytochemical sulforaphane. Alfalfa is not a cruciferous vegetable and contains no sulforaphane. At the beginning and end of the study, the researchers analyzed participant stool samples for a chemical called HpSA, known to be a reliable marker of infection with the Heliobacter pylori bacterium. H. pylori causes chronic inflammation of the stomach lining, significantly increasing the risk of stomach cancer and duodenal or stomach ulcers. While 25 to 30 percent of people in the United States carry the bacteria in their stomachs, 80 percent show no symptoms of the infection. Infection rates are much higher in Japan, at nearly 90 percent, due in part to crowding.

Overcooking broccoli and cruciferous vegetables will dramatically lower the amount of cancer protective phytochemicals. Researcher Elizabeth Jeffery has discovered how to maximize the cancer fighting power of broccoli. It involves heating broccoli just enough to eliminate a sulfur-grabbing protein, but not enough to stop the plant from releasing the important cancer fighting compound sulforaphane. The chemistry for triggering the release of sulforaphane is tricky. Sulforaphane is linked to a sugar molecule through a sulfur bond. When the broccoli enzyme breaks off the sugar to release the sulforaphane, a sulfur-grabbing protein can remove the newly exposed sulfur on the sulforaphane and inactivate it.

Instead of worrying about overcooking the broccoli and losing the enzyme that releases the sulforaphane, we focused on heating the broccoli just enough to destroy the sulfur-grabbing protein, but not enough to harm the enzyme that releases sulforaphane from the sugar, said Jeffery. This delicious, healthy dish offers a serving each of broccoli and cauliflower, which both contain powerful disease and cancer fighting properties. Light steaming helps preserve nutrients and keeps vegetables crisp. Allow time for flavors to marinate and mingle.

Various other scientific studies have identified other components found in cruciferous vegetable such as broccoli, which may have a chemoprotective and even therapeutic effect on cancer cells. Sanjay K. Srivastava, Ph.D., lead investigator and assistant professor, department of pharmacology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has found that phenethyl isothiocyanate, a constituent of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, can inhibit the growth of ovarian cancer cells through dietary intake. The evidence is quite overwhelming and continues to grow all the time the broccoli sprout appears to have undeniable anti cancer properties and should be an important component in the diet of most people worldwide. According to medical research databases such as PubMed.org, the broccoli sprout is perhaps the most intriguing and widely studied vegetable, and with good reason.

Cancer – How to Stop Breast Cancer? | Breast Cancer Prevention | Preventing Of Breast Cancer With Natural Treatment

Breast Cancer Care is a charity in the UK that provides information, practical assistance and emotional support to anyone affected by breast cancer. The organization was founded in 1972 by Betty Westgate who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1968.The superstars for breast cancer protection include all cruciferous vegetables dark leafy greens carrots and tomatoes. The superstar fruits include citrus, berries and cherries. It is best to eat cruciferous vegetables raw or lightly cooked, as some of the phytochemicals believed to offer protection against breast cancer are destroyed by heat. Many studies have shown that regular exercise provides powerful protection against breast cancer. Aim for 30 minutes or more of moderate aerobic activity five or more days a week. Consistency and duration, not intensity, are key.Alcohol use is the most well established dietary risk factor for breast cancer. The Harvard Nurses’ Health study, along with several others, has shown consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a day can increase breast cancer risk by as much as 20 to 25 percent.

Breast tissue is developing from prenatal stages through the time that a woman gives birth and breastfeeds, and breast structures that have not gone through the full sequence of development are particularly sensitive to the detrimental effects of environmental toxins. The cancer usually doesn’t show up until adulthood, but the stage may well have been set in the womb, or early in childhood. What can we do? This feature will help you identify some known and suspected breast cancer risk factors. Some of these tips apply mostly to middle aged or older adults both women and men who are at the age when diagnosis is most common. Other tips will help parents protect their children, even in the womb.

Enjoy more vegetables. They contribute other powerful antioxidants, phytochemicals and they also contribute fiber.Work a Carotenoid-rich food into your day.Eat more fiber, especially from whole grains. Phytochemicals found in whole grains have been found to reduce risk of breast and colon cancers in animal studies.Keep fat, saturated fat, and animal fat moderate. Researchers are still trying to figure out if and how the amount of fat in our food changes our risk for breast cancer. Results from animal studies have suggested the possibility that the amount and type of fat we eat could encourage or discourage certain breast tumors.Switch to monounsaturated fats.

Research has been showing that monounsaturated oils, such as olive and canola oil, do not have many cancer-promoting effectsA multivitamin, 500 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C in divided doses, 200 to 400 IUs of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols, and pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Also take 200 mcg of the mineral selenium or eat one to two Brazil nuts as an alternative. If you have a chronic medical condition or take prescription drugs, consult your physician first.Maintain a positive mental outlook. Engage in self nurturing behaviors regularly. Develop rich, warm and mutually beneficial relationships with family and friends. Get adequate sleep. The mind body associations with breast cancer are significant.

In spite of the overwhelming evidence that suggests vitamin D stops cancer, many dollars and jobs will be lost in breast cancer detection and treatment as breast cancer rates begin to plummet. Expect to hear pharmaceutical and radiology companies and commercial breast cancer awareness foundations criticize the new Vitamin D theory. Although the scientists do not know whether the low levels of vitamin D are a cause or a consequence of the cancer, their findings and the results of other studies suggest that low levels of vitamin D may be involved in the progression of early breast cancer to more advanced stages.

The different leukemias likely have different causes. Known causes include natural and artificial ionizing radiation, viruses such as Human T ymphotropic virus, and some chemicals, notably benzene and alkylating chemotherapy agents for previous malignancies.Use of tobacco is associated with a small increase in the risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia in adults.

1. Past chemotherapy or radiation for another cancer.

2. Being exposed to certain chemicals in the workplace.

3. Being exposed to large amounts of radiation.

They concluded that there is limited evidence that high levels of ELF magnetic fields might cause childhood leukemia.

Exposure to significant ELF magnetic fields might result in twofold excess risk for leukemia for children exposed to these high levels of magnetic fields.

However, the report also says that methodological weaknesses and biases in these studies have likely caused the risk to be overstated. No evidence for a relationship to leukemia or an other form of malignancy in adults has been demonstrated.

What are Pancreatic Cancer Treatments?

The stages of pancreatic cancer are easy to understand. What’s harder is determining the stage without resorting to major surgery. This procedure involves removing the pancreatic head and the curve of the duodenum together, making a bypass for food from stomach to jejunum and attaching a loop of jejunum to the cystic duct to drain bile.

It can only be performed if the patient is likely to survive major surgery and if the cancer is localized without invading local structures or metastasizing.Resources provided include symptoms, causes and prevention, and treatment of the disease. Pancreatic cancer affects 27,000 people each year.

1.Chemotherapy:This marked the first FDA approval of a chemotherapy drug for a non-survival clinical trial endpoint. Gemcitabine is administered intravenously on a weekly basis. Addition of oxaliplatin conferred benefit in small trials, but is not yet standard therapy, a recently published study ECOG 6201 failed to show superiority of GEMOX over gemcitabine alone. Fluorouracil may also be included, however no large randomized study has shown significant survival benefit from this addition.

2.Radiation Therapy:In radiation therapy, high-energy X rays are directed at a person’s body to kill cancer cells and keep them from growing and multiplying.Compared to standard radiotherapy, IMRT allows CTCA radiation oncologists to use higher radiation doses than traditional therapies would allow in these areas. At the same time, IMRT helps to spare more of the surrounding healthy pancreatic tissue from harmful doses of radiation.

3.Surgery:Studies have found that patients do better overall when their surgery is performed at a medical center with a high volume of these surgical procedures. Although the definition of high volume varies by study, UCSF surgeons perform major pancreatic surgeries at a rate well above that which is considered high volume. The kind of surgery recommended depends on your type of cancer, location of the tumor, your symptoms, whether the cancer involves other organs and whether the cancer can be completely removed.

The first goal of pancreatic cancer treatment is to eliminate the cancer, when possible. When that isn’t an option, the focus may be on preventing the pancreatic cancer from growing or causing more harm.

What are the Colon Cancer Exams and Tests?

A pelvic exam is one of the first steps in diagnosing several conditions such as gynecologic cancers and sexually transmitted diseases. How often a woman needs a pelvic exam varies depending on her risk factors for certain conditions and previous exam findings.

Although most people who get colon cancer do not have one of these mutated genes, having them greatly increases your chance of getting colon cancer.

A doctor can find and remove polyps during a colonoscopy, a test in which a doctor uses a flexible video camera or scope to look at the inside of the colon. If a close member of your family, such as your brother, sister, or parent, has had colon cancer, talk with your doctor about colonoscopy screening.

                 1. Positron emission tomography is a 3 dimensional scanning technology where a radioactive sugar is injected into the patient, the sugar collects in tissues with high metabolic activity, and an image is formed by measuring the emission of radiation from the sugar.

                2. Positron emission tomography is a 3 dimensional scanning technology where a radioactive sugar is injected into the patient, the sugar collects in tissues with high metabolic activity, and an image is formed by measuring the emission of radiation from the sugar.

                3. Genetic counseling and genetic testing for families who may have a hereditary form of colon cancer, such as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer or familial adenomatous polyposis.

                4. Blood tests Measurement of the patient’s blood for elevated levels of certain proteins can give an indication of tumor load. In particular, high levels of carcinoembryonic antigen in the blood can indicate metastasis of adenocarcinoma. These tests are frequently false positive or false negative, and are not recommended for screening, it can be useful to assess disease recurrence.

                5. Standard computed axial tomography is an x ray method that can be used to determine the degree of spread of cancer, but is not sensitive enough to use for screening. Some cancers are found in CAT scans performed for other reasons.

                6. Virtual colonoscopy replaces X ray films in the double contrast barium enema with a special computed tomography scan and requires special workstation software in order for the radiologist to interpret. This technique is approaching colonoscopy in sensitivity for polyps. However, any polyps found must still be removed by standard colonoscopy.

If you have one parent who has HNPCC, you have a 50% chance of having one or more of these gene changes. If both parents have it, your chances of getting it are about 80%.

WHAT ARE THE KIDNEYS?
The kidneys are paired organs, which have the production of urine as their primary function. Kidneys are seen in many types of animals, including vertebrates and some invertebrates. They are part of the urinary system, but have several secondary functions concerned with homeostatic functions. These include the regulation of electrolytes, acid-base balance, and blood pressure. In producing urine, the kidneys excrete wastes such as urea and ammonium; the kidneys also are responsible for the re absorption of glucose and amino acids. Finally, the kidneys are important in the production of hormones including vitamin D, rennin and erythrocyte.

Located behind the abdominal cavity in the retroperitoneum, the kidneys receive blood from the paired renal arteries, and drain into the paired renal veins. Each kidney excretes urine into a ureter, itself a paired structure that empties into the urinary bladder.

Renal physiology is the study of kidney function, while nephrology is the medical specialty concerned with diseases of the kidney. Diseases of the kidney are diverse, but individuals with kidney disease frequently display characteristic clinical features. Common clinical presentations include the nephritic and nephrotic syndromes, acute kidney failure, chronic kidney disease, urinary tract infection, nephrolithiasis, and urinary tract obstruction.

Understanding About cancer::

Cancer begins in cells, the building blocks that make up tissues. Tissues make up the organs of the body.

Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old, they die, and new cells take their place.

Sometimes this orderly process goes wrong. New cells form when the body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor.

Tumors can be benign or malignant:

Benign tumors are not cancer:
—> Benign tumors are rarely life threatening.
—>Usually, benign tumors can be removed, and they seldom grow back.
—> Cells from benign tumors do not invade tissues around them or spread to other parts of the body.

Malignant tumors are cancer:

—> Malignant tumors are generally more serious than benign tumors. They may be life threatening.
—> Malignant tumors often can be removed, but they can grow back.
—> Cells from malignant tumors can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Also, cancer cells can break away from a malignant tumor and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system. That is how cancer cells spread from the original cancer (primary tumor) to form new tumors in other organs. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

What is Colon Cancer?

Colon cancer is the third most distinctive cancer in the United States. Although it does not get much attention unlike the breast cancer and prostate cancer, it is considered as the second leading cause of deaths when it comes to cancer.

Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-shaped growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy.

After a while, the cells are too busy dividing and growing and they stop making mucus. The colon cancer cells start to pile up on top of each other. Then they form a lump or a bump on the inside of the colon. If the bump sticks out into the inside of the colon, it is called a polyp. This is how we get polyps in colon cancer.

Colon cancer is quite common, being the third most common cancer in men and women in the U.S. About 110,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with colon cancer each year. The colon and rectum are part of the body’s digestive system that removes and processes nutrients from foods and helps pass waste material out of the body. The first 6 feet of the large intestine are called the large bowel or colon. The last 6 inches are the rectum, which is the passageway from the colon to the anus.

Using care when working with cancer causing agents such as asbestos and cadmium and eating a well balanced diet may also help prevent kidney cancer.

1.Reduce or avoid exposure to environmental toxins:The sun’s ultraviolet rays are strongest during the summer from about 11 a.m. to about 3 p.m. The risk is greatest at this time, when the sun is high overhead and shadows are short. In the United States, your employer is required to tell you what chemicals you may be exposed to on the job.

2.Control high blood pressure:If your blood pressure is high, you can discuss options for lowering your numbers. Lifestyle measures, such as exercise, weight loss and diet changes, can help. Some people may need to add medications to lower their blood pressure.

3.Maintain a healthy weight:If you’re overweight or obese, reduce the amount of calories you eat each day and try to exercise most days of the week.

4.Exercise regularly:The American Cancer Society recommends exercising 30 minutes, at least 5 days a week for cancer prevention. Exercising doesn’t have to mean going to the gym to lift weights.

5.Eat more fruits and vegetables:Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, which help repair our damaged cells. Green, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables are your best bet to help prevent cancer. Studies also show that dark fruits, like blueberries and grapes, may also have anti-cancer properties.

6.Quit smoking: It is responsible for not only lung cancer, but many other types of cancer. One of the best ways to prevent cancer is to quit smoking or never start.
