What are Pancreatic Cancer Treatments?

The stages of pancreatic cancer are easy to understand. What’s harder is determining the stage without resorting to major surgery. This procedure involves removing the pancreatic head and the curve of the duodenum together, making a bypass for food from stomach to jejunum and attaching a loop of jejunum to the cystic duct to drain bile.

It can only be performed if the patient is likely to survive major surgery and if the cancer is localized without invading local structures or metastasizing.Resources provided include symptoms, causes and prevention, and treatment of the disease. Pancreatic cancer affects 27,000 people each year.

1.Chemotherapy:This marked the first FDA approval of a chemotherapy drug for a non-survival clinical trial endpoint. Gemcitabine is administered intravenously on a weekly basis. Addition of oxaliplatin conferred benefit in small trials, but is not yet standard therapy, a recently published study ECOG 6201 failed to show superiority of GEMOX over gemcitabine alone. Fluorouracil may also be included, however no large randomized study has shown significant survival benefit from this addition.

2.Radiation Therapy:In radiation therapy, high-energy X rays are directed at a person’s body to kill cancer cells and keep them from growing and multiplying.Compared to standard radiotherapy, IMRT allows CTCA radiation oncologists to use higher radiation doses than traditional therapies would allow in these areas. At the same time, IMRT helps to spare more of the surrounding healthy pancreatic tissue from harmful doses of radiation.

3.Surgery:Studies have found that patients do better overall when their surgery is performed at a medical center with a high volume of these surgical procedures. Although the definition of high volume varies by study, UCSF surgeons perform major pancreatic surgeries at a rate well above that which is considered high volume. The kind of surgery recommended depends on your type of cancer, location of the tumor, your symptoms, whether the cancer involves other organs and whether the cancer can be completely removed.

The first goal of pancreatic cancer treatment is to eliminate the cancer, when possible. When that isn’t an option, the focus may be on preventing the pancreatic cancer from growing or causing more harm.

What are Pancreatic Cancer Preventions?

Although there’s no proven way to prevent pancreatic cancer, you can take steps to reduce your risk. The ACS recommends keeping a healthy weight, and increasing consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while decreasing red meat intake, although there is no consistent evidence that this will prevent or reduce pancreatic cancer specifically. In 2006 a large prospective cohort study of over 80,000 subjects failed to prove a definite association.

One cancer, however, that has been an enduring enigma to biomedical research has been pancreatic cancer. No reliable screening tests or cures are available. Among the leading cancers, it has the worst survival and is the least studied.

1.Eat a healthy diet

2.Exercise regularly

3.Maintain a healthy weight

4.Quit smoking

5.Alcohol drinking

6.Coffee drinking

A few risk factors for pancreatic cancer have been identified, but many people who get pancreatic cancer have no risk factors.People who smoke are about twice as likely to get pancreatic cancer as nonsmokers. The more you smoke, the higher the risk of pancreatic cancer.

The pancreas is responsible for producing hormones like insulin and glucagon, which help control our blood sugar levels. It also produces enzymes that help breakdown protein and carbohydrates during digestion. There are several types of pancreatic cancer, however the most common is adenocarcinoma.

This type of cancer affects cells that produce digestive enzymes. Much less common types of pancreatic cancer include islet cell carcinoma, pancreatic blastoma, and pseudopapillary neoplasms.By avoiding what risk factors we can for bladder cancer, we may be able to reduce our chances of developing it.

What are Pancreatic Cancer Exams and Tests?

The pain is usually felt in the upper abdomen as a dull ache that radiates straight through to the back. It may be intermittent and made worse by eating. Weight loss can be profound; it can be associated with anorexia, early satiety, diarrhea, or steatorrhea. Jaundice is often accompanied by pruritus and dark urine. The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Pancreatic cancer

1.Laparoscopy:If a problem needs to be fixed, other instruments are used. These instruments are inserted either through the laparoscope or through other small cuts in your abdomen. One common use is to find the cause of a health problem, such as chronic pelvic pain.

2.CAT scan:A CT scan can help rule out other causes of abdominal pain, determine whether tissue is dying, and find complications such as fluid around the pancreas, bleeding, blocked veins, and obstructed bowels. Also called computerized tomography and computerized axial tomography scan.

3.Ultrasonography:Even if ultrasonography reveals no obvious etiology, it can facilitate diagnosis by excluding potentially life-threatening conditions. Emergency abdominal ultrasonography is indicated for the evaluation of aortic aneurysm, appendicitis, and biliary and renal colic, as well as blunt or penetrating abdominal trauma.

4.Pathology tests:A pathologist is a physician specializing in the diagnosis of disease based on examination of tissues and fluids removed from the body. Pathology tests involve evaluation of a small sample of cells under a microscope to determine whether they are cancerous by identifying structural abnormalities.

5.Surgical biopsy:Biopsies can be performed using a small needle and local anesthesia or a larger cut is made under general anesthesia. Now more options are available. Fine needle aspiration biopsy is frequently used and entails placing a very thin needle inside the mass and extracting cells for microscopic evaluation.

6.Fine needle aspiration biopsy:This is because a lump was discovered and your physician wants to determine what that lump is. In the past, the only way to do this was to have you go to the hospital and undergo a surgical procedure that may be painful, might cause scarring, had more complications, and involved a longer period ofanxiety while waiting for the results. With the use of FNA, all this is unnecessary in most cases.

7.Biopsy:A needle is passed through the syringe into the area being examined. The surgeon uses the needle to remove the tissue sample. Needle biopsies are often done using x rays, which guide the surgeon to the appropriate area.

8.Stool tests:Stool can be analyzed under the microscope or by mixing many chemicals or reagents to get the desired results. In case of Ascariasis one may see worm larvae in stool and worm eggs in the stool which can be ascertained by the microscopic examination by the qualified microbiologist.

9.Urine tests:A regular urine test may be done to help find the cause of symptoms. The test can give information about your health and problems you may have.Urine has hundreds of different body wastes. What you eat, drink, how much you exercise, and how well your kidneys work can affect what is in your urine.

10.Blood tests:This test can help detect blood diseases and disorders. These include anemia, infection, clotting problems, blood cancers, and immune system disorders.

Malignancies in the pancreatic body or tail usually present with pain and weight loss, while those in the head of the gland typically present with steatorrhea, weight loss, and jaundice. The recent onset of atypical diabetes mellitus, a history of recent but unexplained thrombophlebitis, or a previous attack of pancreatitis are sometimes noted.

What are Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms?

If the tumor blocks the common bile duct and bile cannot pass into the digestive system, the skin and whites of the eyes may become yellow, and the urine may become darker. The diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is usually delayed because symptoms are nonspecific and are often attributed to another condition.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms:

1.Abdominal Pain:Abdominal pain causes can range from extremely severe life-threatening conditions, to various less serious conditions Any symptom of abdominal pain needs prompt professional medical advice.

2.Pain in the upper abdomen:It eased off for a little while to where i could move more but didn’t go away. The pain started getting worse again though a short time later and ended up to the point where i can barely stand up and the only way i could get a little relief was to lay very still.

3.Yellowing of the Skin and Eyes:The yellow coloring is caused by a build up byproduct of old red blood cells, called bilirubin. This buildup occurs when the liver cannot process all of the retiring red blood cells in your body.

4.weight loss:Again, unintended weight loss is a common symptom of pancreatic cancer and one that is usually one of the first symptom experienced along with abdominal pain.

5.Changes in Stool and Urine Color:The urine may change color for many reasons, some harmless and some quite severe. Blood in urine is called “hematuria” and may change the color of urine to a pinkish, reddish, orange, darker, or even greyer looking urine.

6.Loss of appetite:There are so many factors responsible for anorexia. It can be developed due to cancer that is known as cachexia or cancer. Induced anorexia and anorexia nervosa are the another forms of anorexia mainly developed in adolescence and predominantly affect girls.

7.Trousseau sign:This sign may become positive before other gross manifestations of hypocalcemia such as hyperreflexia and tetany, but is generally believed to be more sensitive than the Chvostek sign for hypocalcemia.

              8. Clinical depression:Clinical depression is a serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Individuals with clinical depression are unable to function as they used to. Often they have lost interest in activities that were once enjoyable to them, and feel sad and hopeless for extended periods of time.

The acidic physical causes the human body’s metabolic cycle to run more slowly than usual, normal cell activity become weak, causes hypoxic cells and organs disease and endocrine imbalance. All of above elements will cause pancreatitis or pancreatic duct hyperplasia and other chronic diseases.

Acidification of body fluid causes a decline in dissolved oxygen cells, if its number falls down to 65% of normal, it will lead to cell death. The pain may become worse after the person eats or lies down. Cancer of the pancreas can also cause nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and weakness.

What are Pancreatic cancer Causes?

The disease is relatively rare in people who are younger than age 40, and most patients are diagnosed after the age of 45. About 90% of patients with the disease are older than 55 years and about 70% are older than age 65. A single cancer cell grows and divides rapidly, becoming a tumor that does not respect normal boundaries in the body.

1.being Jewish people of a Jewish background have a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer

                2.being male

                3.suffering from chronic pancreatitis

                4.smoking

5.age as people get older, their risk factor for pancreatic cancer increases

                6.being diabetic

Researchers do know that pancreatic cancer is caused by a mutated gene. The mutated gene could have been passed down from a parent or could have mutated after birth.

A risk factor is something that increases the chance that you may develop a disease; it is not a guarantee.

What is Pancreatic Cancer?

The pancreas is a gland located behind the stomach and in front of the spine. The pancreas produces digestive juices and hormones that regulate blood sugar. Cells called exocrine pancreas cells produce the digestive juices, while cells called endocrine pancreas cells produce the hormones.

The prognosis is relatively poor but has improved the three year survival rate is now about thirty percent, but less than 5 percent of those diagnosed are still alive five years after diagnosis.

The pancreas is a gland about 6 inches long that is shaped like a thin pear lying on its side. The wider end of the pancreas is called the head, the middle section is called the body, and the narrow end is called the tail.

The pancreas lies behind the stomach and in front of the spine, organs like the stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder, and small intestine.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 38,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and about 34,000 people die from the disease each year.Because many patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have a poor prognosis, it is very important that patients are offered the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. Patients who have pancreatic cancer should speak with a physician regarding clinical trials that are available.
