Compulsive overeaters are often caught in the vicious cycle of binge eating and depression. With the eating disorder of Compulsive Overeating food is used as a coping mechanism to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Many compulsive overeaters speak of using the episodes as a way to numb all that is going on around them. The amount of food eaten and duration can vary greatly.

For many individuals suffering from Compulsive Overeating, binges may not be able to be broken into specific episodes but rather days where the individual eats more than normal throughout the day. Triggers for compulsive overeating include depression, anxiety, interpersonal stressors, boredom, prolonged dieting, and body image dissatisfaction.

Compulsive overeating may temporarily relieve the stress of these unwanted feelings, but for the individual the overeating episodes are unfortunately followed by feelings of guilt, shame, disgust, and further depression. For the Compulsive Overeater, episodes of Compulsive Overeating usually occur in secret and any evidence is often hidden from others.

1.Eating when hurt, angry or upset
2.Buying large amounts of food
3.Excessive consumption of food
4.Rapid and extreme weight gain

Compulsive overeating is an “addiction” to food. The common thread between this type of disorder and Anorexia/Bulimia is that the behavior is rooted in feelings of low self – esteem. Compulsive overeaters rely on food to help them cope with stress and anxiety, or as a way to make up for the things that they feel are missing in their lives.

Compulsive eaters are usually overweight and aware that they have an eating disorder, but find it difficult to change since the problem lies in their inability to properly cope with emotional issues.

Men and Women who suffer from this disorder are at high risk for high blood pressure and cholesterol, kidney failure, arthritis, bone deterioration, stroke and most especially heart attack.

Here are some symptoms experienced by individuals suffering from compulsive overeating:

1.Stores food in odd places for their convenience (usually inside their bedrooms, so that they wouldn’t have to walk to the kitchen if ever they feel like eating.)

2.Tends to feel that food is their only friend

3.Has the tendency to blame their “being fat” whenever they fail in their social or professional life – also thinks that losing weight will greatly improve their happiness and sense of fulfillment.

4.Has a significantly increased appetite when stressed or anxious

5.Perspires easily and experiences shortness of breath even when physical activity is relatively light

6.Tries to lose weight by trying popular diet fads but this often results in eventual failure

7.Resulting weight gain can lead to other problems like high blood pressure, cholesterol and leg and joint pain.

8.Prefers to eat alone because they are ashamed of eating habits

9.Not being able to control eating

10.Difficulty in maintaining a healthy weight

Compulsive overeating is accompanied with much guilt and shame. People with this condition often feel that they are not good enough and are ashamed that they could not control their eating habits. This only makes it worse because their negative feelings only lead them to more compulsive overeating. Food is how compulsive overeaters deal with their craving for acceptance and appreciation. Some use their overweight appearance to keep people away because they subconsciously feel undeserving of love, while others use it as punishment whenever they feel bad about themselves. One does not become successful in overcoming this condition unless they gather up the courage to face the real emotions they are afraid to feel and unless they can honestly admit the issues that cause them to be stuck in this destructive behavior.

Know that bingeing, or eating uncontrollably even when you are not hungry, is one of the primary symptoms of compulsive overeating.Recognize that a preoccupation with body weight may be a signal that someone is suffering from an eating disorder, such as compulsive overeating. This preoccupation may manifest itself in the form of obsession over food or excessive commentary regarding diet or exercise.

Depression and mood swings may be both symptoms and underlying causes of a compulsive overeating disorder. It is essential that a full mental health assessment be made of any patient who exhibits symptoms of depression and an eating disorder, such as compulsive overeating, to determine what underlying causes may be behind both.Notice whether you or your loved one has a history of significant weight fluctuations. A marked fluctuation in weight gain or loss may be indicative of a compulsive overeating disorder.Recognize symptoms that may indicate another eating disorder such as bulimia. Those who are compulsive eaters do not typically purge after eating by vomiting or following an aggressive exercise regimen. They also do not typically engage in other purging habits through medicinal assistance, such diuretics or laxatives.

As with Anorexia and Bulimia, the causes of binge eating disorder are still unknown, although it is viewed by most experts as having psychological roots. It is known that up to 50 per cent of binge eating disorder sufferers have a history of depression, although this may be both a cause and/or a consequence of binge eating. Episodes of binge eating are frequently triggered by emotional feelings or reactions, and impulsive behavior patterns appear to be more common in people with binge eating disorder. Strict or forced dieting is not the answer to this condition: indeed it may even aggravate binge eating.

Binge eating disorder typically includes periods of excessive overeating. However, a person with a binge eating disorder does not subsequently induce purging (vomiting), as is the case with bulimia.Binge eating can occur on its own, or alongside other disorders or conditions, such as Prader-Willi disorder, or a lesion of the hypothalamus gland.Binge eating can encourage the development of hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Treatment options depend on what is causing the binge eating.

A person with a binge eating disorder feels compelled to eat too much. Individuals will consume enormous quantities of food, even when they are not hungry. Binge eaters believe they have absolutely no control over their eating. After a bout of binge eating the person feels disgust and guilt. This feeling of failed self may form part of an underlying problem, such as anxiety or depression – both can either cause or exacerbate the disorder.

Even the best of us occasionally overeats, helping ourselves to seconds, and even thirds; especially on holiday or festive celebrations. This is not a binge eating disorder. It becomes a disorder when the bingeing occurs regularly, and the binger is shrouded in shame and secrecy. The binger is deeply embarrassed about overeating and vows never to do it again. However, the compulsion is so strong that subsequent urges to gorge themselves cannot be resisted.

In many parts of the world binge eating disorder is not considered a distinct condition. However, it is the most common of all eating disorders. Perhaps as more research is published and scientists learn more about it, this may change.

Social and Cultural Causes of Binge Eating Disorder:Social pressure to be thin can add to the shame binge eaters feel and fuel their emotional eating. The way one is raised can also increase the risk for binge eating disorder. Some parents unwittingly set the stage for bingeing by using food to comfort, dismiss, or reward their children. Children who are exposed to frequent critical comments about their bodies and weight are also vulnerable. Another factor which has been linked to binge eating is sexual abuse in childhood.

Psychological Causes of Binge Eating Disorder:Depression and binge eating are strongly linked. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, up to half of all binge eaters are either depressed or have been before. There is further evidence that low self-esteem, loneliness, and body dissatisfaction are involved in compulsive overeating. People with binge eating disorder may also have trouble with impulse control and managing and expressing their feelings.

Biological Causes of Binge Eating Disorder:Studies show that biological abnormalities contribute to binge eating. For example, the hypothalamus (the part of the brain that controls appetite) may not be sending correct messages about hunger and fullness. Researchers have also found a genetic mutation that appears to cause food addiction. Finally, there is evidence that low levels of the brain chemical serotonin play a role in compulsive eating.

Causes Of Binge Eating

1.The Spike:Large amounts of food will cause your insulin to spike in which you’ll grow tired and in slump.

2.It’s Easy:To succeed is hard but to eat yourself till you fall asleep is effortlessly.

3.Temporary Comfort:When you overeat you are feel just for that time your eating. But next time before you do think about how you’ll fell after.

4.Artificial Sweeteners:Some sweeteners increase sugar levels which can cause you to feel worst!

5.The Uncontrollable Mind:A lot of people think they think but instead their mind is just busy, moving with the world. Stop and think.

6.Lack Of Progress:Remember desires become reality when you go out and prove your worthy of them everyday! You never know you could be quitting on the day it all comes together!

7.Poor Social Life:You know for most emotional eaters, a poor social life occurs because they hide from it, not because lack of acceptance!

8.Shame:Whatever it is you can overcome it. Regain your confidence and step back out in full faith!

9.Giving In To Foods That Taste Great:Man sometimes it’s good and you can’t let go. But keep in mind we eat for energy and I think that’s what’s forgotten.

The causes, largely unknown, seem to tickle the scientists and layman alike. Psychiatric disorders such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders are in tandem with this disorder. The reasons for this differ with a person’s ability to deal with any associated emotional pressue from within the family or at work. Often people think that binge eating makes them masters of their moods; on the contrary, it is the reverse with moods controlling them. Potent triggers for binge eating are getting overtly hungry, and a feeling of deprivation and sometimes desperation.

Compulsive overeating, also sometimes called food addiction, is characterized by an obsessive/compulsive relationship to food. Professionals address this with either a behavior-modification model or a food-addiction model. An individual suffering from compulsive overeating disorder engages in frequent episodes of uncontrolled eating, or binge eating, during which they may feel frenzied or out of control, often consuming food past the point of being comfortably full. Binging in this way is generally followed by feelings of guilt and depression.

Unlike individuals with bulimia, compulsive overeaters do not attempt to compensate for their binging with purging behaviors such as fasting, laxative use or vomiting. Compulsive overeaters will typically eat when they are not hungry. Their obsession is demonstrated in that they spend excessive amounts of time and thought devoted to food, and secretly plan or fantasize about eating alone. Compulsive overeating usually leads to weight gain and obesity, but not everyone who is obese is also a compulsive overeater. While compulsive overeaters tend to be overweight or obese, persons of normal or average weight can also be affected.

In addition to binge eating, compulsive overeaters can also engage in grazing behavior, during which they return to pick at food throughout the day. This results in a large overall number of calories consumed even if the quantities eaten at any one time may be small. When a compulsive eater overeats primarily through bingeing, he or she can be said to have binge eating disorder.

Left untreated, compulsive overeating can lead to serious medical conditions including high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, and major depression. Additional long-term side effects of the condition also include kidney disease, arthritis, bone deterioration and stroke.

Compulsive overeating is characterized by uncontrollable eating and consequent weight gain. Compulsive overeaters use food as a way to cope with stress, emotional conflicts and daily problems. The food can block out feelings and emotions. Compulsive overeaters usually feel out of control and are aware their eating patterns are abnormal. Like bulimics, compulsive overeaters do recognize they have a problem.

Compulsive overeating usually starts in early childhood when eating patterns are formed. Most people who become compulsive eaters are people who never learned the proper way to deal with stressful situations and used food instead as a way of coping. Fat can also serve as a protective function for them, especially in people that have been victims of sexual abuse. They sometimes feel that being overweight will keep others at a distance and make them less attractive. Unlike anorexia and bulimia, there is a high proportion of male overeaters.

People suffering with Compulsive Overeating have what is characterized as an “addiction” to food, using food and eating as a way to hide from their emotions, to fill a void they feel inside, and to cope with daily stresses and problems in their lives.

People suffering with this Eating Disorder tend to be overweight, are usually aware that their eating habits are abnormal, but find little comfort because of society’s tendency to stereotype the “overweight” individual. Words like, “just go on a diet” are as emotionally devastating to a person suffering Compulsive Overeating as “just eat” can be to a person suffering Anorexia. A person suffering as a Compulsive Overeater is at health risk for a heart attack, high blood-pressure and cholesterol, kidney disease and/or failure, arthritis and bone deterioration, and stroke.

Men and Women who are Compulsive Overeaters will sometimes hide behind their physical appearance, using it as a blockade against society (common in survivors of sexual abuse). They feel guilty for not being “good enough,” shame for being overweight, and generally have a very low self-esteem… they use food and eating to cope with these feelings, which only leads into the cycle of feeling them ten-fold and trying to find a way to cope again. With a low self esteem and often constant need for love and validation he/she will turn to obsessive episodes of binging and eating as a way to forget the pain and the desire for affection.

It is important to remember that most Eating Disorders, though their signs and symptoms may be different, share a great number of common causes and emotional aspects.

Frankincense Oil – What are Frankincense Essential Oil Health Benefits? | Natural Uses and Benefits Of Frankincense Essential Oil | Health Benefits Of Frankincense Essential Oil

The essential oil of frankincense is produced by steam distillation of the tree resin. The oil’s chemical components are 75% monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenoles, sesquiterpenols, and ketones. It has a good balsamic and sweet fragrance, while the Indian frankincense oil has a very fresh smell.Standardized preparations of Indian frankincense from Boswellia serrata are being investigated in scientific studies as a treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and osteoarthritis. Initial clinical study results indicate efficacy of incense preparations for Crohn’s disease. For therapy trials in ulcerative colitis, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis there are only isolated reports and pilot studies from which there is not yet sufficient evidence of safety and efficacy.

The health benefits of Frankincense Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties like anti septic, disinfectant, astringent, carminative, cicatrisant, cytophylactic, digestive, diuretic, emenagogue, expectorant, sedative, tonic, uterine and vulnerary.Frankincense Oil is extracted from gum or resin of Frankincense or Olibanum tree, whose scientific name is Boswellia Carteri. Main components of this essential oil are Alpha Pinene, Actanol, Bornyl Acetate, Linalool, Octyl Acetate, Incensole and Incensyl Acetate. Frankincense has been a popular ingredient of cosmetics and incense burners since ages. Its instances have been found in the remains of ancient Egyptian and Anglo Saxon civilizations. It is also associated with religious activities.

frankincense oil when it comes to skin, one of the most impressive aspects is the oils ability to prevent and even fade scars. The application of frankincense essential oil can reduce the appearance of marks from boils, acne, pox and even stretch marks.Essentially, any scar on your body or face can be treated and become less visible thanks to this miraculous essential oil.In terms of prevention, frankincense essential oil has been used for centuries as a way to keep the skin healthy.

Childhood obesity has become an increasing problem in our society. Individuals who are overweight as children are more likely to be obese as adults. They are also more likely to suffer from illnesses such as heart disease. Therefore, it is critically important that parents attempt to combat childhood obesity. However, if your child is overweight, you may be wondering how to effectively counteract the problem. While you’ll want to keep your child’s weight in check, you’ll also want to make sure that you don’t prevent your child’s growth. Here are some tips for helping your child to lose weight, and to keep it off:

It can help to stick to the basics. Don’t worry about counting calories and carbohydrates and fat grams. Instead, provide healthy meals and snacks and encourage regular physical activity.

Being a good role model is also important, starting when your kids are young. This can help the whole family to be healthy.

If your child is already overweight, you will likely have to make some changes to his diet. But this isn’t as hard as you think. It doesn’t have to involve counting every calorie that he eats and drinks, which can be especially hard when your kids are eating at school.

Instead, keep in mind that a pound is equal to about 3500 calories. So if your child is gaining an extra pound a week, he needs to cut his diet back by 3500 calories a week or 500 calories a day so that he doesn’t gain any more weight.

Fortunately, most kids don’t need to make such drastic changes to their diet. Your overweight teen is likely just gaining an extra 10-15 pounds a year, which would be equal to just 100 to 150 calories a day, about equal to a can of non-diet soda.

Control Portions:Work on helping your overweight child with portion control. Educate yourself on correct portions as suggested by the American Diabetes Association. (See Resources) Review the food guide pyramid for kids. Print out the posters and worksheets and review the information with your child. (See Resources) Make it easier for the overweight child to control portions by making your own snack-sized bags of snack foods. Measure out food portions and serve them to your child to discourage overeating.

Get Physical:Discuss the importance of exercise with your overweight child. David Kahan, an Exercise and Nutritional Sciences professor, recommends an hour of exercise a day for kids. Help your child discover a physical activity that he enjoys. Try bike riding, playing volleyball, encouraging neighborhood games of baseball or tag football, rollerblading or soccer playing. The more the child likes the physical activity, the more he will look forward to it and not see it as something he has to do. Encourage walking as an easy form of exercise. The child who walks for half an hour two times a day, walking a dog, for example, or taking a walk with parents, will meet his daily exercise requirements.

Reduce Soda and Sweet Drinks:Limit empty calories from soda. Soft drinks and sugary juices should be a treat, not the primary drink for the child. Reduce the amount of soda and juice you bring into the house to help reduce temptation. Encourage the overweight child to drink water, soy milk or milk or to mix seltzer with a splash of juice. Find the number of calories in your child’s favorite beverages at Caloriesindrinks.com. Teach your child how to read nutrition labels for calories and servings.

Weight Loss Tips For Children

Make better shopping choices. Pay close attention to what is brought home from the grocery store. If it is not brought home, the child can’t eat it at home.

Find ways for kids to exercise. Find things to keep the child active by having them do things that they enjoy. This swimming, playing team sports like baseball, basketball, and football, or having them ride their bike, skates, or skateboard.

Drink less sugary beverages. Most sugary drinks like juices and sodas have high calorie counts. Because these are so easy to ingest, it is just drinking, they can quickly add calories. Choosing healthier alternatives can dramatically decrease the chance of a child becoming overweight.

Consume less fast food. Not only is most fast food unhealthy, but when they are periodically chosen as a food source for a child, the child will inherently believe it is an appropriate food source. If at a fast food restaurant, ensure healthy foods are chosen. Most fast food restaurants now have healthy choices, and if kids learn to pick these, they will be better off.

Reduce calorie intake. It should be relatively simple to reduce a child’s calorie intake by about 200 calories. This can be as simple as one less cookie or bag of chips per day.

It is essential for parents to be actively involved in their own physical health in order to teach their children these values. Dictionary for Dads suggests that you develop or maintain a routine of working out at a gym, jogging or at least walking daily to model good physical health to your children. Encourage your children and spouse to join you at the gym or to take an evening bike ride in the community together. Limit the junk food and engage in conversations about the importance and benefits of physical activity. Provide positive reinforcements (praise) and encourage activity to all family members. If one or more members of the family is over weight or obese engage in weight loss goals together and most of all support each other.

1.Healthy and Nutritious Snacks:Children are fonder of snacks than proper meals. Go for healthy and nutritious snacks and prepare them in an interesting and innovative ways so that your child is encouraged to eat.

2.Encourage Activities With Friends:Children love to play and socialize with their friends. You can call your kid’s friends at home and arrange for a fun activity which also involves physical movement. Go for competitive games and keep prizes for the winner. This will push your child to give his/her best shot, fulfilling your motives at the same time. Children will engage in games once their friends are around. In fact, it’s the easiest way to ensure their fitness.

3.Add Variety:Children have a tendency to get bored of a monotonous schedule very quickly. It is difficult for them to stay interested in anything for long. And therefore, it is important to add variety to the games they play or the physical activities they undertake. For instance, if you child rides a bicycle everyday, he/she will be very soon, over with the fun and excitement that cycling involves. However, you can continue to make it interesting for him/her by changing his/her cycling track. Take your child to cycle in a park or on a rough terrain. Give children adventure and they will certainly enjoy it.

4.A Healthy Diet:Fitness is often associated with exercise and workout. However, eating a healthy diet is equally, an integral part of a right fitness regime. For children, a healthy diet is indispensable at a growing age like theirs. All the physical exercise without healthy food to compensate for that strenuous effort can adversely affect the physical disposition of a child. Children should get all the nutrients from their meals.

5.Encourage Kids To Play:With children, the easiest way to maintain fitness is to get them moving. A responsible parent will encourage his/her child to participate in sports and other physical activities. Make your children health conscious from an early age by encouraging them to devote time on outdoor activities like playing, than sitting indoors to watch television programs. A child doesn’t need to work really hard to be in good physical shape. Regular play is enough to ensure that.

Every living American knows our country has a reputation for obese citizens, and in fact, if you ever do some traveling, you might know our country is ridiculed quite a bit for this characteristic. While no one likes to hear about people being ridiculed about their weight, it presents an alarming trend in this country that has gone way out of control, and it is particularly alarming when we see it spilling over to affect our child populations.

It’s time to get your kid’s active, and one great idea parents are finding is they can do it by installing play sets somewhere in the yard around their house. This is a way to get your kids moving and keep them moving without a whole lot of nagging on your part. It is an addition that will attract them, engage them and hold their attention.

While some parents might balk at the idea, assuming that such home additions are only for the wealthiest of families, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Not only are their very cheap models available on the market that are still safe but having this kind of built in home-entertainment centered around physical activity can offer a good solution on the days when the budget allows for nothing else.

Winter weather can be dangerous in several ways. The dropping temperatures and wind chills create climatic hazards, while the general indoor lethargy of winter can create health hazards due to overeating and less activity. Winter sports, holiday gifts and winter nutrition also present unique hazards that parents should be aware of in order to safeguard their children’s health and well-being. With careful planning and supervision, however, children can enjoy the fun and freedom of playing indoors or outdoors on chilly winter days without substantial risk.

Winter Safety and Healthy Tips for Children:

1.When they are sick, keep them home. Their eyes and activity level are great indicators of how sick they are. If their eyes look heavy even though they are awake, and they are content to just sit and be quiet (sometimes referred to as looking puny) keep them home to avoid exposing their weakened immune system to all the germs they will certainly encounter in their daily routine of preschool, school, and other after school activities. This will help others stay well too. Children’s systems are generally incredibly resilient and will bounce back pretty quickly in a less germy environment, with lots of rest, and a well-balanced diet that includes lots of fluids.

2.Keep small boxes of tissues open and ready in every room. Again, let your child help pick out the designs on the boxes. This may seem like overkill, but often children (and adults) know they need a tissue, but can’t find one. Stock their coat pockets with extra tissues so they are sure to have one on the playground or in your car and when riding in a friend’s car. Having a tissue available when they need it is a simple but effective way to stop the spread of germs. The old adage keeps coming back because it’s true-an ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure!

3.Covering their mouths when sneezing or coughing is still high on the list of things to do, and covering with your arm rather than your hand is better. Sneezing and coughing into hands and then touching door knobs, phones, and other hands just spreads the germs. Just this one action probably keeps hands 50% cleaner.

4.Dressing in layers even on warmer days helps children stay healthier. It’s often such a temptation for children to dress too lightly during the winter when the weather is unseasonably warm. Many inside spaces are still cold and drafty, so insisting that your child wear or be able to add a shirt with longs sleeves, and/or a sweater when needed (lots of times on the same day), will go a long way toward keeping them healthy.

5.Hand sanitizer is a wonderful and effective addition to the arsenal against germs. Keep a bottle in the car so they clean their hands immediately after school or other activities, and before you hand them a snack to eat. Be sure to monitor its use with smaller children to make sure they use it on their hands and rather than inhaling it.

6.Hand washing is still one of the best ways to eliminate the spread of germs from one surface to another. And with the creation of soaps that foam, smell good, come in engaging and kid-friendly containers, and the high-tech motion activated soap dispenser, hand washing has never been more glamorous. Let your child pick out a couple of favorite choices for soap and maybe even splurge and get a lotion for them to use after each wash. Teach them how to blend the hot and cold water so the temperature is warm rather than bone-chilling cold. You’ll be amazed how these seemingly small perks will motivate your child to wash their hands more often.

These are caused by the unusual eating habits and the methods used to purge the body of food (such as vomiting or the excessive use of laxatives). Physical problems do not always develop. They are more likely if you binge and purge often. One or more of the following may develop:

1.Psychological problems:These are very common and include feelings of guilt and disgust after bingeing and purging. Poor self-esteem, and mood swings, are common.

2.Depression:It is fairly common to feel low when you have bulimia. Some people even become depressed, which can respond well to treatment. It is important to talk about any symptoms of depression you may have. Many people find they become more moody or irritable.

3.Teeth problems:These can be caused by the acid from the stomach rotting away the enamel as a result of repeated vomiting.

4.Swelling of hands, feet and face:This is usually due to fluid disturbances in the body. The saliva glands in the face can sometimes swell due to the frequent vomiting.

5.Bowel problems:These may occur if you take a lot of laxatives. Laxatives can damage the bowel muscle and nerve endings. This may eventually result in permanent constipation and also sometimes abdominal pains.

6.Chemical imbalances in the body:These are caused by either repeated vomiting or excess use of laxatives. For example, a low potassium level which may cause tiredness, weakness, abnormal heart rhythms, kidney damage and convulsions. Low calcium levels can lead to tetany (muscle spasms).

7.Irregular periods:Many people have irregular periods as hormone levels can be affected by poor diet. Periods may even stop all together or you may find that your periods have never started, especially if you started having eating problems when you were younger.

Bulimia can, in rare cases, be fatal – but bulimics risk many serious health and wellbeing complications from their behaviors, including:

1.A loss of menstruation.
2.Cardiac arrest and possible death.
3.Stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation.
4.An enlargement of parotid glands (rounded cheeks are a symptom).
5.Ruptures of the esophagus.
6.Dizziness, headaches and fatigue.
7.Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance after excessive purging -This dehydration (and incorrect levels of sodium and potassium in the body) can lead to poor heart functioning, kidney and liver damage.
8.A risk of gastric rupture, in extreme cases of binge eating.
9.Dry skin and hair loss.
10.Tooth decay, sore throat and bad breath, from vomiting.

Mental disorders such as depression and anxiety often arise as a result of, or in combination with, bulimia nervosa. Preexisting obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, or impulsivity disorders may worsen when bulimia nervosa develops.

Treating the health effects of bulimia nervosa, whether they are mental disorders, abuse of laxatives, or the consequences of binge eating, is vital if the treatment of bulimia nervosa is to succeed.

Bulimics use binging and purging as a way to control negative emotions. Bulimics report feeling some release from feelings of depression or anxiety after purging, but this relief is only temporary, as purging, of course, cannot better problems with self-esteem, body-image issues or anxiety.

Bulimia is a serious condition, and is recognized as a mental health disorder, requiring both medical and psychiatric treatment. Most bulimics recognize that their behaviors are problematic, and most will agree to treatment if asked to go. It is therefore very important for loved-ones to remain vigilant to signs of bulimia, and ready to intervene if necessary.

Self-induced vomiting is a common purging technique used after binge eating. Frequent vomiting can result in metabolic alkalosis, an imbalance in the body’s acid/base balance. The effects of metabolic alkalosis range from slowed breathing (including instances of apnea, the cessation of breathing during sleep) to irritability to irregular heartbeat to convulsions and coma.

More noticeable are the effects repeated vomiting has on the teeth. Stomach acid gradually erodes dental enamel, discoloring teeth and causing unusual numbers of dental cavities. As dental enamel continues to erode, teeth become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids.

Frequent vomiting also increases the likelihood of lung aspiration, which can cause damage to lung tissue. Aspirated vomit may cause pneumonia, shock and respiratory distress.
Effects of Ipecac Misuse in Bulimia

Many bulimics induce vomiting with ipecac syrup. Ipecac is an emetic designed to induce vomiting in poison victims. Ipecac is available without a prescription, making it easy for people with bulimia to access.

The effects of repeated use of ipecac can be serious. Ipecac misuse causes muscle weakness and tachycardia (an abnormal, and potentially dangerous, rapid heart rate). Ipecac abuse can also result in cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle can no longer pump sufficient blood. Ipecac-induced cardiomyopathy is a factor in many bulimia nervosa fatalities.

Treatment works, and the earlier treatment is initiated, the better the prognosis

Eating disorders need to be taken seriously because they are potentially life-threatening conditions that affect an individual’s physical, emotional, and behavioral growth and development, and they may lead to premature death. Eating disorders may be seen as a slow form of suicide because self-starvation is an attempt to destroy one’s body. Seemingly innocent dieting, exercise, and weight control behaviors in children and adolescents may lead to dangerous disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, muscle dysmorphia, and other disordered eating or exercise behaviors.

Educating both male and female children about healthy eating and body image is also an important primary prevention task. Health classes in school should teach children about different body types, nutrition, the importance of exercise, recognizing hunger and the dangers of dieting.

Children also need to be taught about critical thinking – how to recognize when media images are unrealistically perfect and to not use those images as comparisons for themselves. Teaching kids strategies to reject peer pressure to succumb to the lure of trying to be thin and perfect might help too.

In addition, parents can be big advocates in building healthy body images, self-esteem and lifestyles for their children. In fact, one of the most important things that parents can do is be strong role models for their children – demonstrating what a balanced and healthy adult looks like. Model eating a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables, exercising in moderation, and participating in fun family activities, even if you are self-conscious of your weight, your abilities, or your appearance. Avoid criticizing your own body, especially in front of your children.

Which is exactly why these athletes may fall victim to eating disorders. In sports where misguided coaches pressure athletes to be extremely thin, a desire to please the trainer may result in a serious eating problem. In 1994, at 22 years old, Christy Henrich, a US top gymnast died of complications from an eating disorder. Six years earlier a remark from a judge about her being too fat to compete in the Olympics drove her to begin a course of unhealthy eating behaviors that only ended with her death.

The enormous pressure to be thin for aesthetic reasons is coupled with many athletes’ belief that they will perform better if they are thinner.

What can a parent do to prevent a child’s athletic passion from ending in disaster? Your best bet is to find the right coach. An ideal coach should be well versed on the dangers of eating disorders, and trained to recognize the symptoms that an athlete may be suffering from such a problem. A good way to determine whether a coach or trainer cares more about the physical and emotional well being of your child than whether she wins the next competition is to observe some training sessions. Does the coach praise efforts and instill a sense of pride-no matter where the child finishes in a competition? Does he or she ask that your child do her best, or does she demand that your child is number one?

Keep the lines of communication open with your child, too. Remind her that while it’s true that in the short term, a lower body fat percentage might improve athletic performance, in the long run, extreme thinness results in loss of muscle, which reduces speed and power. Teach her that the stress that strenuous exercise places on the heart demands that her heart must be healthy. Help her to plan meals for success in athletic performance-and for good health.

Prevention is a topic that has received little attention in the literature on eating disorders. This is ironic because many researchers and health care workers suggest eating disorders are more difficult to treat the more deeply rooted anorexic or bulimic behaviours become in an individual’s lifestyle. Furthermore, most would agree that helping individuals avoid being affected by the factors perpetuating eating disorders (like starvation and nutritional deprivation) is a crucial factor in preventing eating problems from occurring in the first place.“Prevention” is a term that can refer to either the elimination of factors causing eating
disorders – more specifically called primary prevention – or the early detection and treatment of eating problems – known as secondary prevention. Primary prevention focuses on eliminating the causes or “predisposing” factors, while secondary preventionaddresses reducing the causes and the “perpetuating” factors of eating problems.

The goal of primary prevention is to reduce the incidence of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Finding effective ways of approaching primary prevention is a problem because we don’t fully understand what causes eating disorders in the first place. However, we can still address ways of minimizing common social, familial and individual factors, like pressures to be thin, communication problems within the family, and self-esteem issues that are generally recognized as leading to eating disorders
