Sore throat may have many causes. The most common causes of sore throat are infections of the throat and the surrounding structures. Any inflammation or infection of the pharynx, tonsils, esophagus, or larynx may cause sore throat.Sore throats may be associated with many medical conditions. Infections of the throat may be either viral or bacterial and are usually very contagious. Approximately 90 to 95% of all sore throats are caused by viruses such as the flu virus, a cold, or infectious mononucleosis.
Anyone who has a sore throat accompanied by fever should see a doctor. If a doctor suspects strep throat, he or she will run a test by swabbing the back of the throat to confirm the presence of streptococcus bacteria. Usually, a strep test is a combination of a rapid test and a culture. A rapid strep test is not as conclusive as a laboratory culture, but doctors can often confirm strep in about 15 minutes and prescribe a course of antibiotics if necessary. They usually follow this test by sending the sample to a lab for confirmation by culture, which takes about 24 hours.
The presence of a persistent sore throat should be checked by a doctor, as strep throat left untreated can develop into rheumatic fever, a rare condition that can impact the joints and the heart. Penicillins, Macrolides, and Cephalosporins are common antibiotics prescribed to treat strep throat. In rare cases, recurrent strep throat may result in the removal of the tonsils if it is suspected that they are harboring streptococcus bacteria.Strep throat is contagious, and children with strep throat should avoid returning to school or daycare until they have been both without fever and taking an antibiotic for 24 hours. Strep throat can be contracted by airborne germs spread by coughing and sneezing, and also by contact with objects an infected person has touched, which is why the condition is common amongst children.
Other sore throat causes, about 5-10%, are contributed to bacteria such as streptococcus, mycoplasma, or hemophilus. Bacterial sore throats are usually more serious than viral throat infections.A common cause of bacterial throat infection is a particular strain of streptococcus bacteria of the group A Streptococcus, and is commonly called strep throat. This specific bacterium can also cause damage to the kidneys and heart valves as well as causing tonsillitis, sinusitis, ear infections, pneumonia, or scarlet fever.
Outdoor air pollution can cause ongoing throat irritation. But indoor pollution especially tobacco smoke is an even greater cause of chronic sore throat. Smokeless tobacco, alcohol and spicy foods can also inflame your throat.Muscle strain. You can strain muscles in your throat just as you can strain them in your arms or legs. If you’ve ever gotten a sore throat after yelling at a concert or sporting event, you’ve likely strained your throat muscles. Your voice may also be hoarse.
