Dry Eye Syndrome itself cannot be prevented, notably because most of the cases are due to the aging process. However, there are some things that can be done to reduce the prevalence and to ease the discomfort.

1.Stop smoking and avoid smoke:If you smoke, stop. Ask your doctor for help devising a quit-smoking strategy that’s most likely to work for you. If you don’t smoke, stay away from people who do. Smoke can worsen dry eyes symptoms.

2.Position your computer screen below eye level: If your computer screen is above eye level, you’ll open your eyes wider to view the screen. Position your computer screen below eye level so that you won’t open your eyes as wide. This may help slow the evaporation of your tears between eye blinks.

3.Take eye breaks during long tasks:If you’re reading or doing another task that requires visual concentration, take periodic eye breaks. Close your eyes for a few minutes. Or blink repeatedly for a few seconds to help spread your tears evenly over your eye.

4.Consider eyeglass shields to protect your eyes:Safety shields can be added to the tops and sides of eyeglasses to block wind and dry air from getting to your eyes. Ask about shields where you buy your eyeglasses. Swim goggles may create the same effect.

5.Add moisture to the air:In winter, a humidifier can add moisture to dry indoor air.

6.Wear glasses on windy days and goggles while swimming:The wraparound style of glasses may help reduce the effects of the wind. Goggles protect your eyes from chemicals in pool water that can dry your eyes.

7.Avoid air blowing in your eyes. Don’t direct hair dryers, car heaters, air conditioners or fans toward your eyes.

9.Take frequent breaks:When watching TV, reading or working at a computer, take frequent breaks. There are more suggestions in the Computer Use section of this site.

10.Avoid hot, dry environments:A humidifier can be used to keep the air moist. Air conditioning is as bad as heaters for increasing the evaporation of your tears.

11.Avoid excessive air movement:Don’t go outside in windy conditions. Inside, switch off or turn down fans, etc.

12.Artifical tears and lubricating gels:There are a number of eyedrops and ointments that can be used to enhance or stimulate tear production. Discuss these with your ophthalmologist, general practitioner and/or pharmacist before using them.

Keep yourself hydrated all the time especially during hot, dry and windy weather because dehydration will worsen the condition. But the symptoms of dry eye syndrome may be improved by simply drinking more water.Try to decrease dusts and other air born particles by special designed air filters. Those dusts will worsen the symptoms of dry eyes.

Try to blink especially When you performing tasks that require intense visual concentration like reading, using computers or watching TV.Avoid smoke. Smoke, whether yours or someone else, can contribute to dry eyes.Eat healthy diet rich in or take supplements containing vitamins like A,C ,E and Omega-3 oils or fatty acids. Get plenty of sleep to keep your eyes healthy
