Most of us experience pain in the legs while walking and also while resting, but a majority of us ignore the pain or at the most take some pain killers and get momentary relief. But such repeated occurrence of leg pain is not to be ignored as it could be due to an underlying Vascular problem.
The Vascular disease is caused due to the blockage of artery to the leg . It is due to the deposition of fat within the artery wall narrowing it and thus leading to reduced blood supply to the leg and causing pain and other problems. Diabetics and heavy smokers have to be extra careful.
1. Pain on walking relieved by rest
2.Pain preventing you from sleeping at night(Rest Pain)
3.Pain in the legs, hips ,buttock, while walking relieved by rest.
4.Pain when lying down (or when legs are elevated) relieved by dangling or lowering legs
5.Changes in colour appearance of legs and feet.
6.Thin shiny skin on the legs.
7. Thickened brittle toe nails.
8.No hair on toes, legs and calves.
9. Feet turn dark when down,turn pale when up.
10.Blue or purple toes.
11.Wounds (Ulcers) on the lower legs found between toes or on the tip of the toe, outside of the ankles anywhere your shoes rub.
If the pain prevents you from sleeping at night, one may be in danger of losing his leg and has to be brought immeadiately under the notice of a vascular surgeon?.
Dr Chopra further says not everybody needs hospitalisation if the pain is not interfering with your life style then exercise and complete abstinence from smoking is required.
A person with leg pain has discomfort in the structures of the leg. Leg pain may be caused by an injury, irritation, or inflammation of the skin, muscles, bones, or joints in the leg. Sciatica, or a herniated disk in the lumbar spine, may cause pain that shoots down the leg.
Symptoms that can occur with leg pain due to an injury include leg bruising, leg swelling, leg tenderness, and the inability to walk on the leg. Symptoms that can occur with leg pain due to infection or inflammation include skin redness, leg swelling, fever, joint swelling, joint pain, back pain, and swollen lymph glands in the groin.
Treatment for leg pain depends on the underlying cause. Treatment for leg pain may include rest, cold compresses, elevation, crutches, an elastic wrap, a splint or cast, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain, and surgery. Additional treatment for leg pain caused by an infection may include warm compresses and antibiotics.
