Mosquito bite treatment focuses on eliminating the symptoms caused by the allergic reaction. Immediate first aid should entail washing the bite, and applying ice to minimize the localized reaction, if possible. Don’t scratch the bite, as that will cause more histamine to be released, increasing the itching, and may also break the skin, creating the possibility of infection.
Ways to treat the itching and swelling caused by mosquito bites include: Applying a topical antihistamine or cortisone ointment to the bite.Calamine lotion or a paste of baking soda and water may also help to soothe your skinIf you have several mosquito bites, or are experiencing severe itching, you may find relief from an oral antihistamine containing diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine maleate, or loratadine.A topical ointment containing lidocaine can numb the skin, temporarily eliminating the itch
Wash the mosquito bite with warm water and soap as soon as possible.Wrap some ice in a towel and apply to the mosquito bite. You can also apply an ice pack to the area. The ice will help to minimize swelling. Ice is especially helpful if your mosquito bites have a tendency to swell up to the size of small oranges.
Take an over the counter antihistamine medication such as diphenhydramine. Those that are allergic to the preservatives in diphenhydramine can take other common antihistamines such a chlorpheniramine or hydroxyzine hydrochloride. These medications prevent the release of substances, called histamines that cause the itching and redness.
Avoid letting your baby sleep in a room with a mosquito repellent burning. Instead, cover his crib well with a mosquito net. First, shoo away anymosquitoes that might be lurking around your child’s crib, and then cover it with the net. Tuck the net tight into your baby’s mattress so nomosquitoes are able to get in. Your child will then enjoy a good night’s sleep, without the aid of toxic repellents. Similarly, wherever possible, try and use a mosquito netting around your bed instead of lighting a repellent. Some repellents are not very effective, with the result that you get bitten anyway. In addition, mosquitoes gradually develop immunity to the repellents, and stronger ones will be needed later on.
Try to identify the bug. If the bug is dead, scoop it up and take it with you to the emergency department. Be careful, even dead bugs have venom. For pain relief, try sting swabs. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are also good for pain.Bark scorpion stings can cause numbness and tingling in the tissue around the bite. If the site is tingling or burning, see a doctor.
