The Summer Food Service Program for Children (SFSP) was created to serve nutritious meals to children when National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program meals are not available. To ensure all children receive proper nutrition throughout the year, SFSP reimburses organizations that prepare and serve meals to eligible children during the summer and school vacation periods.

Year after year, we hear and read the same advice: Handle food carefully in the summer because foodborne illness — also known as “food poisoning” — is more prevalent in warmer weather. Do foodborne illnesses increase during the summer months? If so, why?

Yes, foodborne illnesses do increase during the summer, and the answer appears to be twofold. First, there are the natural causes. Bacteria are present throughout the environment in soil, air, water, and in the bodies of people and animals. These microorganisms grow faster in the warm summer months. Most foodborne bacteria grow fastest at temperatures from 90 to 110 °F. Bacteria also need moisture to flourish, and summer weather is often hot and humid.

Many families try to escape the summer heat in a pool or nearby lake. To keep your kids safe around the water be sure to childproof your pool by enclosing it in a fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate.Supervise your kids around the pool, even if they know how to swim.Have children who don’t know how to swim wear a life vest instead of “floaties” when they are in the pool.Always have your child wear a life vest when on a lake or river, even if they know how to swim.Take your child to swimming lessons once he or she is four to five years old, the age when most kids can learn to swim.
