It is based in part of the discipline of the historical Buddha, who lived more than 25 centuries ago, and in part on even older forms of yoga. The historical Buddha himself, Siddhartha Gautama, was said to have achieved enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree. In Buddhist mythology, there were twenty eight Buddhas and all of them used meditation to make spiritual progress. Most forms of Buddhism distinguish between two classes of meditation practices, samatha and vipassana, both of which are necessary for attaining enlightenment.

Each winter we offer a series of introductory and intermediate-level courses and retreats covering a wide range of Buddhist topics. Prayer is a form of discursive meditation, and in Hinduism the reciting of slokas and mantras is employed to tranquilize the mind to a state of receptivity. In most of these systems the goal is identified with the particular psychic results that ensue, sometimes very quickly and the visions that come in the semi-trance state, or the sounds that are heard, are considered to be the end-result of the exercise.

Another form of meditation in Buddhism, `Vipashyana` connotes a clear seeing or special insight which involves intuitive cognition of suffering and impermanence. The more complicated meditations are practiced once the primary forms of meditations are performed and the results of these meditations are attained. After the primary meditations the practitioners of meditation move towards more complicated forms like `Samadhi` or one pointed meditation.

Buddhists consider meditation as a path towards attainment of Enlightenment and Nirvana. Non Buddhists pursue these techniques for purely mental and physical well being and non religious spiritual aims. Even medical science has adopted Buddhist meditation techniques to deal with the various aberrations of human mind.In addition, Kamalashila added three other meditations most importantly Visualisation, Shikantaza or just sitting and Walking Meditation.
